Can You Use a Taxi to Move House? (And Why TT Removals Isn’t What You Might Think)
The name "Taxi Truck Removals" gets us this question fairly regularly. People search for moving house with a taxi, arrive on our website, and aren't quite sure what they're looking at. So let's answer it properly.
Can you use a taxi to move house?
Technically, yes — if you're moving a handful of small items a very short distance, a large taxi or minicab might manage it. Some people use taxis to move a single piece of furniture, a few bags of clothes, or small items between student rooms.
But for a house move — even a small flat — a standard taxi creates some significant practical problems:
- Space: Even an estate car or MPV taxi won't fit a sofa, a double bed, white goods or a dining table. Most house moves involve at least one large furniture item that simply won't go in a car.
- Multiple trips: What looks manageable in a taxi quickly becomes ten journeys. For anything beyond a single carload, a van or removal lorry is far more cost-effective and far less exhausting.
- No equipment: Removal companies carry trolleys, furniture blankets, packing materials and the right straps to move heavy items safely. A taxi has none of these. Moving a washing machine or a wardrobe without proper equipment risks damage to your belongings and injury to whoever is carrying them.
- No insurance: Taxis carry passenger and road insurance — not goods in transit insurance. If something gets damaged during the move, you won't be covered.
- Parking and access: Removal companies handle parking suspensions, building access logistics and council permit requirements. A taxi driver is not set up for any of this.
Why we're called Taxi Truck Removals
We are not a taxi service. The name comes from our approach to removals: like a taxi, we come to you. You book, we arrive at your door, we handle the job, and we leave when it's done. No long-term contracts, no depot visits, no unnecessary complexity. The "taxi" in the name refers to the on-demand, door-to-door nature of our service — not a car with a meter.
TT Removals has been serving Essex since 1975. We're a BAR (British Association of Removers) member and Which? Trusted Trader. We move houses, flats, offices and everything in between, with the right vehicles, the right equipment and the right team for the job.
What we'd actually recommend for small moves
If you're moving a small number of items and cost is the main concern, here's a more practical breakdown of options:
- Man and van: For very small moves — a few boxes, a single room — a man and van is often the most cost-effective choice. We can advise on this if you call us and describe what you have.
- Part-load service: If you don't have enough to fill a removal lorry, a part-load service lets you share the vehicle with other moves travelling the same route. We offer this for moves where the volume doesn't justify a full van.
- Full removal service: For anything larger than a single room, a professional removal team will save you time, stress and almost certainly money compared with multiple taxi trips and the risk of damage to your belongings.
