How to Pack for a House Move: A Step-by-Step Guide
Packing is the part of moving house that most people dread – and often underestimate. Start too late or do it poorly, and you will regret it. Do it right, and moving day becomes far less stressful.
Here is our step-by-step guide to packing for a house move, based on nearly 50 years of removals experience at TT Removals.
Start Earlier Than You Think You Need To
The single biggest mistake people make is starting to pack too late. Even a small home contains more than you realise once it is all packed into boxes. As a rule of thumb:
- 8 weeks before: Start decluttering. Donate, sell or dispose of anything you no longer need. You will save money on packing materials and moving costs.
- 4–6 weeks before: Begin packing items you rarely use – books, seasonal clothing, decorative items, spare room contents.
- 1–2 weeks before: Pack the main living areas, wardrobes and bedrooms, leaving out only what you need day to day.
- Moving day: Pack the final essentials – bedding, kettle, toiletries, phone chargers – into a clearly labelled open
